Grundfos Alldos on top form for major Russian project
Eight activated carbon treatment systems in only 6 months for waterworks in St. Petersburg
Grundfos Alldos succeeded in planning, designing, constructing and ensuring the turnkey delivery
of eight container systems for processing 10% activated carbon solution in an absolute minimum of
time. Just eight weeks from the date the order was received for this major project, worth several
millions of Euros, the first two stations left the plant headed for Russia.
Shortly before Christmas 2005, a huge inquiry from Russia landed on the desks of our project engineers.
The company Degussa Moscow - a satisfied Grundfos Alldos customer of many years' standing - asked for support,
and urgently. Eight waterworks around St. Petersburg required our help in treating drinking water using
activated carbon.
Despite the upcoming public holidays, the team of experts from Grundfos Alldos got straight to work drafting
plans and cost estimates and checking dates with suppliers. Their rapid reaction paid off just as quickly.
The company's bid was successful and the contract arrived in the third week of January.
The task now was to design, construct and arrange the turnkey delivery of eight container systems for processing
the 10% activated carbon solution in the shortest time possible. Just eight weeks from the date the order was
received, the first two stations left the plant headed for Russia and the last two containers were on their way
before the end of June.
At the heart of each container station is a dosing system with a mixing tank for activated carbon. The largest
system has a tank volume of 7,000 l and the dosing rate can be set at up to 9 x 1200 l/h. A particular highlight
in all eight systems is the PLC panel with ultra-modern, high-resolution touchscreen panel. It depicts the entire
activated carbon processing unit as a flowchart on site. Individual components, such as the eccentric screw pumps
integrated into the container station, can be selected at the tap of a fingertip. Employees at the waterworks can
then use plain-text submenus in Russian to carry out all adjustments quickly and easily. Additionally, all input
and operational data, measurement values and reports are saved in a log book and can be called up onscreen without
the need for a keyboard.
Five of the container stations are also equipped with a silo and a big-bag emptying station for pneumatic transport
of activated carbon. The sizes of the silos vary - in two stations capacity is 70 m³, two of the systems offer 15 m³
and one has a silo with a capacity of 10 m³.
